Quick Overview

a finely detailed quality animal figure

An ideal addition to the Animals of Australasia Pack

Animaux de l'Australie

A finely detailed quality animal figure of a platypus that is indigenous to Australasia. It is a semi-aquatic mammal that has webbed feet like a frog, a bill like a duck, venom like a snake and lays eggs like a bird and therefore is very unusual.  When the first platypus was brought to Britain from Australia, people thought it was a joke and that someone had sewn a duck's bill to a mammal's body. Then it was assumed to be a bird or a reptile as it laid eggs, but it is a mammal.

The animals can be used with the World Puzzle Map, the other sets of animals from different continents, the Animals of the Continents Puzzles and our other .pdf files to discuss the differences and similarities between animals, their worldwide distribution and habitats.

ELG: Understanding The World: children know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another. They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.
